5 Safety Tips for Women Planning to Travel Alone

In the recent past, there has been significant rise among women traveling alone not only in US but also in other parts of the world. If you are skeptical about the idea of traveling alone, by gaining knowledge on the laws and customs of the place you wish to travel you can rest assured that you will have a pleasant traveling experience.

However, it is a fact that a woman travelling alone has to take more precautions compared to her male counterpart. Here are some important tips for women who are planning to travel alone.

1. Before you leave

Before you leave your home for a travel destination in another country, you should leave enough contact information with a friend or a family member at home – your complete name, addresses of the place where you are going to stay, your contact numbers, email address, copy of your passport identification page, your air ticket information, flight details, etc. Do not forget to take along enough medicines for your health condition for the entire trip.

2. At the hotel

When you check in to a hotel, while registering do not put a check mark for Mrs/Miss/Mr; instead you should only mention your name. While giving a contact number, do not let the receptionist say it aloud. If your hotel’s policy requires you to leave the keys on the counter when you go out, do not just leave it on the counter but hand it over to a desk manager who will keep it in a safe place.

3. Make friends with local women

Whether you are staying in a hotel or going to a market, make efforts to become friends with the women around you. This is important as this will make you confident that there are many women around you who can pitch in to help you in case there is any difficult situation or danger.

4. Dress conservatively

Revealing tops and miniskirts can invite unwanted attention and hence, unexpected problems. Indecent dressing may even result in violating the law in certain countries. Hence, it is advisable to stick to conservative dressing style to remain safe.

5. Exude confidence

A very good way to combat unwanted attention is to remain confident whenever you are out on the street. Try your best not to appear lost or confused. If you feel that you are unable to find the right way to the hotel, do not let others know about it by appearing confused. Instead, you can go to a shop and ask for directions. You can also look into the GPS navigator on your smartphone to find the correct path.
